Chef of the House Challenge 2010

TOO MANY CHEFS - A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES® (RMHC®) OF THE COASTAL EMPIRE

May 6, 2010– SAVANNAH, GA- Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire will host the 2nd annual Chef of the House Challenge July 26th - August 1st and August 23rd - August 29th at the Ronald McDonald House®, 4710 Waters Avenue. Chefs arrive 3:00 PM, dinner is served and judged at 6 PM and the event ends at 8:30 PM. All funds benefit children and families staying at the Savannah House.

Picture a fun, local “Iron Chef” with a fundraising twist and a “Bring Your Own Challenger” format. Chef of the House features amateurs with a passion for cooking and helping, as well as Culinary Masters with a skill for grilling and giving back.

Once a Chef has registered and chosen a challenger, they plan a meal for 30 people to include a main dish, side dish or appetizer and a dessert. They will be cooking for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House as well as the Judges of the competition. The trick is that when they arrive on their Challenge day, they will be faced with a secret ingredient donated by NLAWS Produced to incorporate into one or more of their recipes. Chefs will be judged on the overall meal and successful incorporation of the secret ingredient. The winning team will receive special recognition and a $25 Gift Certificate to Kitchenware Outfitters for each member of the team.

The second component of the competition is to gain support from family, friends and the community by fundraising for the Share A Night fund, which makes it possible for families in need to have a place to stay while their children are in the hospital. It costs $65.00 to house one family for one night and although families are asked to contribute $10.00 per night toward the cost, more than 70% are unable to make that donation. No one is ever turned away because of inability to pay. The program helps maintain the 10-bedrooms of the House, and it allows RMHC to offer all the qualities of home--beds, showers, laundry room, and a home-cooked meal to the families we serve at no cost to them. The House operates at nearly 100% occupancy, 365 days a year.

Chefs set up an online webpage where donors can just click and give. As an extra incentive, anyone who supports the chefs with a $65 or greater will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Kitchenware Outfitters!

In 2009, the Chef of the House Challenge began as a small event hoping to raise $5,000 to help with the organization’s Share A Night fund. By the end, the event netted more than $26,000 for RMHC.
