. . . more about Adopt A Meal
Using our kitchen facilities, a group can bring groceries and prepare a meal at the House. We encourage our volunteers to prepare the meal in our kitchen to enhance our "Home-away-from-home" atmosphere. If a group is unable to prepare a meal here, they may choose to have something delivered from a restaurant or catering service.
This is a volunteer activity that is great for groups of up to 8 people, which is how many our kitchen comfortably holds. Service organizations, church groups, corporate teams, college organizations....all types of groups have provided meals for our families.
If you want to participate in providing a meal, please complete our Adopt A Meal program application. Because this activity is so popular, dates for providing meals are typically requested well in advance. Please see our Adopt A Meal Guidelines (listed below) for the answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about this program. If you have any further questions, please contact Lucy McLaughlin.
1. Reserve your date with the Volunteer Coordinator. Please do this either by phone or mail.
2. Complete and return the Adopt A Meal program application.
3. Dinner should be prepared for approximately 15 - 20 people plus any members of your group that would enjoy having dinner with the families.
4. Dinner is served at 6p.m. Please plan your arrival accordingly.
5.The outside grill is available for your use. Please remember to clean it afterwards.
6. We have two gas ovens and two microwaves available to use.
7. Gloves must be worn and will be provided for your use during food preparation.
8. Please limit the number of people in your group to no more than eight. That is the number of people our kitchen will accommodate comfortably.
9. Put all pots, pans and utensils in the dishwasher. No hand washing!
10. Please remember that due to the varying hospital schedules our families keep, some may be sleeping while you are preparing dinner. We ask that you bear this in mind and keep noise levels to a minimum.
11. Cleaning products and supplies are under the kitchen sink to assist you in returning the kitchen to a clean state.
12.The food is served buffet style and will be kept available until 7 pm, after which it will be packaged, dated and stored in the refrigerator. Families in the House at the dinner hour vary on a daily basis so don't be disappointed if some of your preparation needs to be refrigerated. It will be enjoyed when the families return.
13. Under no circumstances is photography of our families permitted unless you have made prior arrangements with a staff member. The privacy of our familes is important to us.
